How Home Security Works

All security systems are based on the same premise: sensors and a control panel. Each entry point to the home is monitored by a sensor that is triggered if a door or window is opened. When a sensor is activated it notifies the control panel that the home has been accessed. The control panel typically allows 60 seconds to pass, giving you or another authorized person time to enter a disarm code. If no disarm code is entered then a signal is sent to the monitoring station to dispatch the authorities.

Alarm Sensors

The first line of defense against unauthorized entry is the sensors that monitor entrances to the home. Door and window sensors are used to detect a window opening, while glass break sensors can be used for larger windows or sliding glass doors. Once installed the sensors will alert the control panel of entry when they are activated.

Alarm System Control Panel

The control panel provides the link between your home and the security monitoring station. Placed in a central location, the control panel is where you can arm and disarm your security system. The control panel also lets you send an instant communication to the monitoring station that you need help.

Alarm Monitoring Station

Most alarm systems are connected via landline phone to a monitoring station, which is staffed by security personnel to monitor your home alarm sensors. When an alarm signal is sent from the home’s control panel to the monitoring station the staff take immediate action. Depending on the type of alarm they may notify the police or fire department, or call the home to ensure you are ok.

Customer Service

When you need assistance setting up and making changes to your alarm system, or if you have questions, you should be able to contact your alarm company’s customer service department. They should be able to answer any concerns you may have about your alarm system, or resolve any issues you are having with the equipment.
