How to Pick an Alarm Company

What should my home security company offer?

Selecting a home security system is about finding a reputable alarm company that can deliver safe, smart, affordable security for your family and home.   Below are a few questions to consider before you begin your alarm company search.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER BEFORE SEARCHING FOR ALARM COMPANIES

  • What are my security needs and how do I plan to use my alarm system?
  • What areas of my home do I need secured (doors, windows)?
  • Should I select wired or wireless alarm sensors?
  • Should I choose safer cellular monitoring?
  • Do I want video monitoring and services?
  • Do I want remote access and control with my BlackBerry or iPhone?

Once you have the basic framework of your alarm systems needs, you’ll be ready to search for your alarm company.  Many people begin by searching online through Google or Yahoo, using phrases such as “wireless home security” or “DIY home security”.  With so many websites and offers, the search results can be very confusing. Which companies can you trust? Which online sites are legitimate alarm companies?  Which alarm companies have satisfied customers?

There are several good websites you can use to help you investigate any alarm company you are considering.  Websites such as, the Better Business Bureau, www.RipoffReport.com, and www.complaints.com, or customer review sites such as www.Epinions.com or www.Yelp.com are good resources that you can use.  If a company has a significant number of negative reviews, or a poor rating from the Better Business Bureau, you may want to remove that company from your consideration set.

When you are ready to contact an alarm company to discuss alarm systems, packages, and pricing, be sure to ask some of the questions highlighted below.

QUESTIONS TO ASK EVERY ALARM COMPANY

  • Do you include cellular equipment and cellular monitoring in your basic package?
  • What’s included in the monthly monitoring fee?
  • Does a salesperson or technician need to come out to my home?
  • Is your company fully licensed in my state?
  • How long is the monitoring contract?

There are thousands of home security companies across the United States offering a wide spectrum of services, pricing, and safety.  Shopping for a home security company doesn’t have to be overwhelming if you know what to look for and are armed with all the necessary questions.  Be sure to consider what you want your home security company to provide for you and you family, and select the one that best meets your criteria.
