A Great Falls family says they shouldn't have put their travel plans on a social networking site after returning from a 10-day vacation to find their home ransacked and burglarized. Biff and Amy Larson shared on Facebook the day they were leaving and how many days they'd be gone celebrating their children's graduation.
Best Laid Plans
The couple says before leaving they arranged for neighbors and friends to check on their home, and made sure all their doors and windows were locked. They say the burglary likely happened at night: thousands of dollars in belongings are missing. Sgt. Bryan Slavin of the Great Falls Police Department says putting travel information on social networking sites is like advertising to criminals. The Larson's say they have ordered a security system.
Facebook Can Help Police
To be fair, law enforcement agencies all across the US are turning the tables on criminals – and have begun using Facebook against the bad guys. Since so many homeowners have installed wireless security cameras to catch intruders in action, there is a ton of video footage that shows burglaries in process, with pictures of who is doing the burgling. police can circulate the video for identification of the perps.
