Burglars Read Facebook – Take Care what You Share on Social Media

Hundreds of millions of us are already on Facebook – and of course FrontPoint has a Facebook page. But one thing FrontPoint doesn’t have to worry about: posting too much information on our page about when we are leaving the building, and coming back to find our offices have been burglarized! For homeowners, sharing too much information on social media can clearly be a problem. And when it comes to tipping off potential intruders, Facebook leads the pack - as this article on a burglary in Great Falls, MT demonstrates.

A Great Falls family says they shouldn't have put their travel plans on a social networking site after returning from a 10-day vacation to find their home ransacked and burglarized. Biff and Amy Larson shared on Facebook the day they were leaving and how many days they'd be gone celebrating their children's graduation.

Best Laid Plans

The couple says before leaving they arranged for neighbors and friends to check on their home, and made sure all their doors and windows were locked. They say the burglary likely happened at night: thousands of dollars in belongings are missing. Sgt. Bryan Slavin of the Great Falls Police Department says putting travel information on social networking sites is like advertising to criminals. The Larson's say they have ordered a security system.

Facebook Can Help Police

To be fair, law enforcement agencies all across the US are turning the tables on criminals – and have begun using Facebook against the bad guys. Since so many homeowners have installed wireless security cameras to catch intruders in action, there is a ton of video footage that shows burglaries in process, with pictures of who is doing the burgling. police can circulate the video for identification of the perps.

If you secure your FB page to 'friends only' and are careful who you friend, this should never happen (even so, I never post vacation info or pics until AFTER I'm safely home). :-)

Great advice, and thanks for sharing. It's unfortunate that not enough people take the steps that you suggest. The other problem, and it's been documented, is that you may know who all your friends are (and trust them), but you don't necessarily know who all THEIR friends are - that is the problem. Some documented burglaries that started with secure and innocent posts on FB have been traced through several "layers" of friends to determine how the perps got the info in the first place.
