Burglars Strike Three Times at Same Location – Apple Store is the Scene of the Crime

It’s a well-known fact that many burglars are serial offenders – and the only thing that stops them is being caught and put away. It’s also known that some of these perps return to the scene of the crime, as I’ve described in prior posts. But when one retail establishment is hit three times over the course of several months, it must be a special store with articles that attract the burglar. In this repeat theft that’s exactly what happened: the target was the Apple Store in Naperville, IL, a western suburb of Chicago.

Burglars seem to love targeting the Apple Store, where $30,000 in computer equipment has been stolen yet again. It was hit around 4:43 a.m. Monday, which around the same time of the morning it has been burglarized twice before.

Apple Products are Attractive to Thieves

Naperville police responded to an activated alarm at the downtown Naperville store, where the front door had been shattered. Thieves entered the same way in the other two burglaries. “Subsequent investigation has revealed that five suspects entered the store wearing hooded coats, ski masks and gloves carrying tote containers,” stated a news release sent by the department today. “Once inside, the offenders used the containers to remove computer equipment valued at approximately $30,000.”

Alarm industry professionals know that the most attractive targets for thieves are cash or items that can be easily turned into cash: jewelry, electronics, prescription drugs, and guns. Apple products fit the bill very nicely.

Smash and Grab

The video showed the thieves were in the store for less than one minute, police said. Burglars also wore gloves and ski masks in the January 16 burglary, and resulted in a $30,000 loss. More than $24,000 in merchandise was reported stolen after a September 22 Apple Store burglary. All three cases remain under investigation by the Naperville Police Department.

This was clearly a well-planned and executed heist. Under a minute in and out is fast, and unless police were already nearby, the odds of catching the thieves at the scene is very small. Then again, if you’ve been in an Apple Store, you have seen the open layout and accessibility of the equipment. Sadly, while Apple may be able to render stolen computer gear useless once it is stolen, there is still a loss to the company.

In this case the best deterrent may be to make the store harder to enter – although many retailers resist such measures for esthetic and other reasons. The store did have a working alarm system, but with the thieves so well organized, and the target items so clearly visible, that was not enough. Fortunately it’s a different story for protecting your home, where the best deterrent is still a monitored alarm system – especially one with safer cellular monitoring and smarter interactive features.
