Tips & Tricks of Explaining Geo-Services

This blog was originally published in November 2014. It was updated in May 2020 with new product information.

Geo-services is an incredibly useful feature of the Frontpoint alarm system that’s all about making your life a little bit easier—like automatically turning the lights off for you when you forget. But it does more than that. It can also remind you to arm your system, adjust your thermostat, and control your lights and cameras—or do it for you.

Sounds pretty neat, right? How does it all work?

How

geo-services work in a nutshell

It starts with the “geofence,” an invisible ring around a location that you designate. Any time you (and your smartphone) enter or exit the geofence, any geo-service rules and settings you have applied will automatically go into effect.

You can have multiple geofences, each with their own set of rules. You could leave your home’s geofence and receive an arming reminder. Or enter the geofence surrounding your home and have your home’s smart lights automatically turn on as you pull in the driveway.

Geo-services also support multiple users, and each individual can have their own rules and settings.

To learn more about geofencing, check out our blog on how geofencing works with smart home security systems.

How to enable

and configure geo-services with Frontpoint

Enabling geo-services is super easy and can be done in three steps!

  1. Download the Frontpoint app onto your smartphone (if you haven’t already done so).
  2. Log in to the app and open the options menu and then select “Geo-Services.”
  3. Drag the slider to the right to turn geo-services on, then confirm by selecting Turn On.

*The GPS on your phone must be enabled to use Geo-Services.

  1. Log into your account on MyFrontpoint.com.
  2. Click on the Mobile tab, and then the Geo-Services link that’s below it.
  3. Create a geofence by clicking on the Add a Fence link. Here you can specify the location of your geofence and change its name and radius (between 1-100 miles). Click Save when you’re finished.
  4. Click on the Light Automation Rule link. Here you can create a variety of rules for your Wireless Light Controls. To create a rule that automatically turns your lights off when exiting your geofence.
  1. Click Save.

And you’re done!

Remember, you don’t necessarily need smart light bulbs to set up geo-services. You can also use wireless light controls that convert lamps and small appliances into smart devices. For example, you can use a wireless light control to turn on a fan or humidifier.

Rules and

settings for geofences

Now that you’ve set up your geofence, there are plenty of rules and settings you can apply to your system. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Arming reminders– As mentioned before, notifications can be sent to your smartphone if you forget to arm your alarm. But you can also receive notifications for when specific system events take place, specific sensors are triggered, and when a sensor remains open for too long.
  • Thermostat control– You can set your thermostat to automatically adjust to an energy-saving mode when leaving home, and to a more comfortable setting when you’re on your way back. This is a great way to save energy (and the dent in your wallet).
  • Pause video recording – Rules can be placed so specific video recordings will be paused whenever you're within the geofence, allowing you to prevent unwanted recordings.
  • Event-triggered lights – You can set up your Wireless Light Controls to automatically turn on or off when certain events occur—like whenever a user crosses the geofence.

Is this a free app to use on the smartphone?

Yep, the app is <a href="http://www.frontpointsecurity.com/equipment-overview/controls/mobile-apps" title="Frontpoint | Mobile App" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">free to download</a>. You need to have Interactive or Ultimate Monitoring for it to sync with your system. Great question!

Hi Mike, if you have a smart thermostat, it connects through your Frontpoint system. You can learn more about this <a href="http://www.frontpointsecurity.com/equipment-overview/cameras-and-home-automation/thermostat" title="Frontpoint | Thermostats" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">here</a> or by calling our support team.

With multiple users can you set it so the thermostat will go down only after the last person has left?

I do not have a smart phone. Is this something that must be enabled? I have no idea how to do it or if it is necessary.

Hi Rhea, you need to have a smartphone in order to use Geo Services. Unfortunately, if you don't have one there's no way to use this service. Great question!

I have a Blackberry Q10. Is this available for that phone? I've looked around and I don't think so. If not, when will it become available for Blackberry phones?

Hi Joe, sorry it took so long to reply! Unfortunately, at this time, the mobile app (and Geo-Services) is not available for the Blackberry Q10. Currently, the app for Blackberry only works with the Blackberry Curve, Pearl, Bold and 8800 series with OS 4.2.1 or newer. I also have not received any information on when the app will be made available for your device. Hopefully, we'll hear some news soon and I'll make sure to let you know immediately!

Does the Geo-fence alert work work now on IOS 8 phones? I have not been able to activate geo-fence and was told that it was due to complications with IOS 8 but that you were working on it. thanks

Hi Clyde, I apologize for the delay in responding to your question! I believe there is now a fix and am having a Customer Support Specialist reach out to you soon to help activate your geo-fence. Again, sorry that this took so long, but I hope everything gets sorted out! Thank you for your patience.

I currently utilize the geofence feature and feel there is room for improvement. I have multiple devices each with a set of rules for light automation; I have to use multiple rules since one rule does not allow multiple mobile devices. But for example when I am at home and another device crosses into the geofence the rule takes effect and the lights turn on even though I am already within the fence. Would it be possible to create a feature similar to an arming reminder where the system knows a device is already within the geofence so the other light automation rules become invalid? Just my thoughts.

Hi Travis, that's a great thought and I agree completely, the geo-fence feature is really handy but there is certainly room for enhancement. We talk with Alarm.com (the brains behind the Geo-Services) often, so I'll make sure to bring up your suggestion when the time comes. Thanks!

Hi, I've switched to a new phone. How do I remove the old phone from the list of Geo-Devices on the website? Thanks
Valerie Saponara

Jason, you can easily delete that phone number out of your "address" book on your myfrontpoint.com account and add in the new phone number. Once you do this, just re-make that Geofence rule using the new phone number. Let me know if you need anything else.

Hi there, I live in a city, and the 1 mile minimum radius for a geofence makes this tricky. I work less than a mile from home, but I'd still like to use this feature. Do you know if there are plans to adjust that minimum in the future to be less?

Kristin, at this time there are no plans to adjust the geo-fence radius but it is definitely something we can look into for future implementation. Thanks for the great suggestion!

It it possible to have the alarm set to "away" when my phone crosses the geo-fence? I know it can trigger lights and temperature however, it would be convenient to have the alarm arm itself everytime my phone leaves our driveway.

Roma, thank you for reaching out. Due to the varying accuracy of the GPS settings on cellular phones, we do not have an automatic arming feature associated with our Geo-fences, as this could lead to unwanted arming's, which could potentially lead to false alarms. We hope this was helpful!
