Understanding 3G and What It Means for Your Home Security System

3G is the third generation of wireless mobile communication used by most major cellular carriers that allows mobile devices to communicate with one another and access the internet. It allows users to utilize the internet on their mobile devices. This year, cellular carriers are turning off their 3G networks, to make room for more advanced network technologies, like 4G, 4G LTE and 5G. With the launch of 4G and 4G LTE, users have access to faster internet and network speeds. However, with the shutdown of the 3G networks, mobile devices that rely on a 3G network will not have a connection.
As a result of the 3G shutdown, various devices will need to be updated or replaced to avoid interruptions, such as home security systems, certain medical devices, tablets, smartwatches, vehicle SOS services, and certain other 3G-reliant connected products. Businesses all over are urging customers to upgrade or replace everyday products and services in their cars and homes before they drop connectivity.
Certain Frontpoint security systems rely on 3G technology, which means an update will be needed before cellular carriers shut down the 3G networks. Frontpoint is working hard to ensure this process is straight-forward and easy for its customers. Customers can keep their current panel, with no new contract needed. Customers with the Simon XT model panel will need to order the 4G LTE Radio and install it into their existing panel to keep connectivity.
I received an email, call, or text about a 3G update for my alarm system. What should I do now?
If you receive an email, call, or text, it is essential to follow the instructions to update and activate your 4G LTE Radio to avoid interrupting your home security system. If you have any questions regarding the radio swap or activating your upgraded device, please visit Frontpoint Support.
Why do I need to have my alarm system updated?
It is important to update your system by ordering the new 4G LTE Radio for your panel to continue functioning. If you do not update your alarm system from 3G to LTE, you are at risk of your system not working because it will no longer be able to communicate along cellular networks as it did prior to the 3G shutdown. The new 4G LTE Radio is available in your MyFrontpoint account.
Which systems/customer need updates?
- Simon XTs that have a 3G radio will need the 4G LTE Radio

We recommend you update your panel now before the cellular carriers shut down the networks. Please take action as soon as you receive communications from Frontpoint and follow all the instructions provided. As always, we’re here to help if you have any questions.
