Florida Home Intrusion is Classic Burglary Example, for Lots of Reasons

It’s not hard to find reports of increasing burglaries, in just about any area of the US. With a home intrusion averaging one every 14 seconds, that’s a lot of break-ins. And the average loss of personal property is approaching $2,000. I read hundreds of these reports a week, looking for trends and common themes, and have posted frequently on what you can do to improve the odds of preventing a burglary at your house. This recent report describes a break-in that took place in Palmetto, FL: since it contains many of the issues that I see repeated time and time again, it’s definitely worth sharing.

Burglars broke into a home in broad daylight today, removed two safes and made off with cash, jewelry, and guns worth about $28,000, the sheriff's office said. John C. Olsen, 56, discovered the burglary when he came home this afternoon.

Clearly this was a major theft - compared to the average property loss of $2,000.

Most Burglaries Happen During the Day

I’ve seen stats indicating that 85% of residential burglaries happen between 10 am and 3 pm, when the odds of the house being empty are the greatest. The last thing most burglars want is to encounter the homeowner – and when that does happen, it can get dangerous very quickly. This incident fits the mold.

Burglars Steal the Same Items

The list of targeted items is the same all across the US: cash, jewelry, electronics, guns, and prescription drugs are the standard items. Many burglars are feeding a drug habit, so items that quickly be converted into cash are the most common objects stolen.

Sometime after Olsen left his home at 7:30 a.m., a person or persons broke in to his house at 3011 105th St. East, and ransacked the office and bedrooms. "They removed a 700 lb. stand up safe that contained 23 guns valued at approximately $15,000 and a small 50 lb. safe that was bolted to the wall and contained approximately $7,000 in cash, $3,000 in jewelry and coins, and $3,000 in savings bonds from the master bedroom," the sheriff's office stated.
