The two biggest developments in home security services are safer cellular monitoring and interactive monitoring services (remote control notifications, video, and even home automation). But on the alarm equipment side, security cameras for the home have experienced the greatest growth. It’s hard to scan the crime headlines and reports from across the US (which I do daily) without seeing a story about an intruder being captured on video. Video services are growing, which should make us all feel safer, since it’s much easier to catch a perp when you have his image to share with police. Here’s a high-profile burglary report from The Big Apple, where the stakes were high, and security cameras were on the job. It’s a good thing, too. Security cameras filmed the mugs of two robbers who stole cash and jewelry from the midtown home of a business executive who may have been set up by someone he invited to a recent party, police said Tuesday. George Bardwil and two business associates were overpowered Monday afternoon by two men who then bound them, stole their money, credit cards and up to $300,000 in jewelry. More Background on the Crime "Somebody set me up," Bardwil said, noting the crooks knew exactly what to steal and where they needed to go inside his Turtle Bay home to steal it. Bardwil was in the middle of a meeting when someone rang the buzzer at his E. 51st St. duplex. Bardwil himself opened the door, assuming it was a friend. Once inside, the suspects, one of whom was armed with a semi-automatic pistol, forced Bardwil and his associates to lie on the floor, face down. They bound each of them with twine and one of the suspects headed straight for the bedroom. Perps Knew There Were Cameras in Use The suspect halted the recording of the video surveillance system that controls 15 internal cameras, and then stole the contents of a safe, knowing just where to go to find it. Bardwil said the suspects took between $200,000 and $300,000 worth of jewelry but Bardwil said he doesn't care about that. "My life is what matters," he said. He’s right. Too many people knowingly confront burglars when they should just call the police, not realizing just how dangerous these criminals can be. This time there may have been no recourse, but in many situations homeowners have chosen to risk their lives, with tragic results. But These Burglars Weren’t That Smart Bardwil also said the surveillance system was installed six months ago. Despite their efforts, the suspects were captured on video before they disabled the internal security system. A camera outside the home also captured their image. If the suspects had been more thorough, they would have destroyed the video storage device, in addition to disabling the camera system to prevent it from capturing more footage. That vulnerability is why many people prefer a Security camera system that stores motion-activated video clips off-site – and all you need is an internet connection. This solution is a lot less expensive than buying a DVR (digital video recorder to store your own footage. FrontPoint’s system work that way, and you can even choose to have the video clips sent directly to your smart phone as they occur. Plus, you can view live video any time from any remote location with your smart phone. The world has changed – and technology is now able to provide more peace of mind than ever. We certainly hope the police will use the images and take these burglars off the street. But, let’s not forget that there are plenty more to fill their shoes. Increasing drug use, high unemployment, and other factors have taken property crimes to new heights. That’s why FrontPoint is so committed to spreading the word – about wireless home alarm systems that are safer, smarter, simpler, more affordable, and virtually impossible to defeat.
