I’m seeing more crime reports about thefts from open garages, and can draw two conclusions: more people are leaving their garages open, or more thieves are realizing how easy it is to quickly steal from the garage – including from your unlocked car. And of course, access to your home from your garage is often hidden, and can be easier than you think. The lesson here? Keep your garage door closed. The good news? There is technology that can remind you that you left it open. This news story from Tulsa, OK makes the point on open doors very well.
Thieves were caught by a home-security camera, kicking in a door leading into a garage. Before the thieves were caught on tape, the victims were hit twice by thieves: once the back door to their home was kicked in and electronics were stolen, then they left their garage door open while having a dinner party and the thieves rifled through their cars. The second time they kicked in a side garage door and made off with yard work equipment and a generator.
An Open Invitation – to Thieves
But for some thieves it’s not nearly has hard to keep coming back for more. Police say too many people are making it too easy for thieves who are driving through neighborhoods all over Green Country and essentially finding welcome mats with the message: “Come on in, take whatever you like.”
Fortunately, there is a very powerful addition to the home security arsenal: the wireless garage door sensor for the overhead door. Since a motion sensor is not the most reliable way to protect the garage, especially during summer or in warmer climates, it’s great to add the garage door sensor to your roster of security options. For one thing, it can send you (or anyone you designate) a text or an email whenever the door is opened – and if it’s left open longer than a predetermined time – like five minutes. Since many families keep items of value in the garage, it’s good to know when that door is opened – or left open
Explaining the Garage Door Sensor
The garage door sensor has been with us for some time, but it used to be a clunky hard-wired device that mounted on the door rail and used oversized magnets – and was so tough to install that it was rarely used. The new wireless sensor is smaller than your thumb, and has a weight switch that’s activated as the door is lifted and moves from vertical to horizontal. The sensor communicates wirelessly to your control panel as the door is opened and closed.
Staying ahead of the bad guys (and helping you feel connected and protected) is our full time job at FrontPoint. So, adding this sensor to our offering of GE wireless security equipment was an easy choice – and I ‘m happy to use one of them in my own garage. The garage door sensor exemplifies the innovative approach to interactive, wireless home security that has won us rave reviews all across the US and Canada. If it makes your home safer, and your alarm system smarter, chances are you can get it from FrontPoint – the #1 ranked alarm company in the US. Time to check your garage door?
