The mobile app is just one of the many great features of a FrontPoint alarm system. Our customers frequently share that it’s the one feature that they couldn’t live without because it gives them the ability to access their home alarm systems from any location, at any time.

What about automatic updates for the app for Blackberry? It was already disappointing that the app for Blackberry only worked on the old Java-based Blackberry devices and not the new QNX-based BB10 devices.

Hi John, I’m going to guess that you’re referencing the Garage Door Lift, as we do have a <a href="http://www.frontpointsecurity.com/equipment/security-and-fire/garage-door-sensor" title="FrontPoint Security | Garage Door Sensor" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Garage Door Sensor</a>. The lift is often requested and we’ve had it in testing for some time. We’ve found that it works really well for most users, but some have reported issues, and we’re not quite ready to release it. Once we’re 100 percent behind it, we’ll be sure to let you and other FrontPoint customers know via the Customer Newsletter or here on the FrontPoint blog. Thanks for asking!

Hey John - if you're just slightly handy you can build a really simple garage door opener/closer that not only allows you to control the door remotely but also know if it's open or closed. After getting my awesome system from Frontpoint I came to realize that they did not offer a garage door opener - only a sensor - which is nice but only solves half the issue - knowing if the door is open or closed. So given that fact the z-wave garage door opener gap became a bit more of an urgent issue recently when a neighbor called and told me that my garage door had been left open all day. With this project in combination with the aforementioned garage door sensor from Frontpoint I'll be able to keep myself apprised of such oversights in the future and be able to take care of it from anywhere in the world! REQUIRED MATERIALS: Z-wave plug-in appliance switch (I used a GE 15-Amp Z-Wave Duplex Outlet Lowes $34.99) 120v relay (I used Radio Shack model #275-217, $4) Project Enclosure (I used Radio Shack model 270-1801, $3) Two prong standard power cord (Mine was cut off a dead computer power supply) Approx. 3' of 2-conductor wire (any small gauge, 20-26AWG, will do) Solder/Solder Iron Double-sided foam tape Frontpoint Z-wave garage door sensor installed to send open/close notify ONLY and not to alarm. INSTALL Z-WAVE OUTLET IN CEILING First, replace the outlet in the ceiling where your garage door opener connects for power with the GE Z-Wave outlet. Make sure you shut off your breaker before doing this work to ensure there is no power at the site when replacing the outlet. Plug the garage door opener into the NON Z-Wave plug. You’ll save the Z-Wave controlled plug for later. Next, once the mew outlet is installed correctly, energize the breaker and add the z-wave appliance module to your z-wave controller. Go into the web site and name it “Garage Door Opener”. You can test the functionality of the new outlet with your mobile phone app – when it is off the blue light is lit, when it is on the light is off. You can toggle this back and forth to make sure it works. BUILDING THE CONTROLLER Now, take the small project box and drill two small holes in the side of the box and used an x-acto knife to cut the holes into an oval shaped like the power cord so it would fit with precision. The power cord was cut short enough to eliminate excess wire dangling from the final assembly but long enough to keep the wire from being too tight. Feed the power cord through the hole, then split the strands (or strip back the jacket of you use a jacketed cord) about 1" from the end. Strip the conductors about 1/4" and tin with solder. Solder the conductors across the relay coil. (If you're unfamiliar with relays, don't worry about polarity. As this is AC and coils are not polarized you can connect in any order.) These are the largest pair of pins and are UNMARKED. Again, polarity does not matter. Next, drill a small hole in the lid of the box and feed through your smaller remote wire. As with the power cord, split the conductors about 1", strip 1/4" and tin. Solder across the Normally Open (NO) contacts. This relay has two sets of contacts and it doesn't matter which one you use. They are numbered. I used pins #3 and #5 – you can also use #4 and #6. Depending on the type of connections your garage door opener uses you'll likely want to prepare the other end of the remote wires at this point. Split the conductors back about 3", strip back about 1/2" and tin the wire ends to facilitate connection to your garage door opener terminals. Connect the wires to your garage door terminals for the open/close switch in parallel so they can work together. Consult your garage door opener's user manual to determine which terminals on the opener are connected to your opener's button on the wall. Connect your switch's wires in parallel to the remote wall button. Be aware that most openers have additional wires for bump and optical safety sensors so don't mix them up. Use a piece of double-sided foam tape to adhere the relay to the bottom of the box and another piece of foam tape to adhere the box to the z-wave appliance switch or to some other convenient location. Finally, plug the two prong power cord from the relay box into the Z-Wave outlet. Now, when your z-wave appliance switch is turned on the relay will energize, close the circuit and your garage door opener will act as if you're holding the wall button. When you turn it off it'll appear as if you've released the wall button. TURNING OFF THE RELAY AND NOTIFYING YOU OF OPEN OR CLOSED DOOR I mentioned earlier, the Frontpoint garage door sensor. Since when you energize the Z-Wave outlet noted above it turns ON you really need an automated way to turn it off so the relay shuts down i.e. opens the circuit as if you let go of the button. Install the garage door sensor as Frontpoint recommends. Have them set it up as an open/close notify sensor and NOT to alarm when open. Next go into your empower light control, go to rules and set up two simple rules. Rule #1 when Garage Door Sensor shows OPEN shut OFF Garage Door Opener. Rule #2 when Garage Door Sensor shows CLOSE shut OFF Garage Door Outlet. Be sure to save that. Now each time you turn ON the Garage Door Opener with your mobile app when the garage door sensor shows open the relay will power off – when it shows closed the relay will power off once again. With the sensor now installed you can also see the status of the door. I have other rules setup that tell me if the door has been let open for more than 30 minutes. I can see open/close status from anywhere and if I need to let someone in remotely, boom, I just energize the Z-Wave outlet called “Garage Door Opener” and it turns on the relay, the door sensor gets to a certain point, and the relay shuts down. This works both with open and close flawlessly. This works beautifully and for less than $50 and about one hours work. Good luck and enjoy!!! A police, medical, fire panic button on the mobile app would be nice, in case you are not near your console to activate a panic alarm!

I would like to be able to use the mobile app to dial calls to FrontPoint support for me. It's right there on the phone, so why not have a "call Frontpoint" function?

Does the app send push notifications when power or communication has been disrupted? Also, just to let some people who don't know this already, if you don't have your modem and cameras hooked up to a back up power supply, you can forget any video capture or communication to your phone or tablet in the event of an intrusion while there's no power.(Communication to authorities will still work however) Love my Front Point system, just wish they would provide battery back up for surveillance system.

Hi Mike! Great question. The answer is yes, the app will continue to send push notifications in the event of a power or communication failure – as long as you have it set up. You can set up notifications on your MyFrontPoint.com account to send you text/email/push notifications when your panel goes into a “Not Responding” or “AC Power Failure” state. Updated to the new iOS app and had a hard time finding the HISTORY feature, which I use regularly to check and see when people have entered/exited the house in my absence. After spending a while exploring on my own and not finding it, I called customer support. They didn't know where it was either! Finally, he noticed the little "history" icon on the top right corner. Sure enough, that was it. You should include that piece of information on the list of "what's new" items when you describe the update. TEll people that there is a new "History" icon located at the top right and show what it looks like so we all know where to find it on the updated app! Thanks!!

I'd really appreciate an immediate notification if the electricity goes out. We use Front Point in a summer house and if the power fails during the winter our pipes could freeze. Waiting for the battery backup to run out of juice could cost us valuable time (and burst pipes).

I was able to set-up geolocation services so that I am notified when both my husbands and my cell phone are 2 miles away from the house. This has helped me remember to arm the alarm countless mornings. What I really need now is a reminder that texts me when one of us is RETURNING to our house, so that we don't triggger the alarm when we go in the garage, and have to get to our keypad inside before the alarm goes off.

That's a great suggestion, Annie! As an alternative, have you tried disarming your system on the mobile app when you pull in? That way you won't have to rush to disarm the alarm when you enter the garage. It's not a perfect solution -- I wish the feature you described were available, because I bet a lot of our customers would get some great use out of it -- but I hope it helps.

I agree with Tom. A panic button on the mobile app would give me that extra piece of mind. If someone comes through the door I should be able to notify authorities immediately instead of waiting 30 seconds etc..

I'd like to be able to customize which sensors are armed/not armed in Stay mode. A Custom mode that can be setup from website is also a good idea. And adding Bypass function to mobile app would be a super plus.

I only recently thought of this due to a break in story of a friend shared with me recently. It would be neat if the alarm system could be customized with times that motions are on similar to how someone may customize their ac control throughout the day. For example, I want my motions on in the middle of the night but it would be neat not to have to switch between arm stay and arm away as I'm going to bed or waking up in the morning. Just a random thought!

I enabled the Geo Fence option to alert my wife and I if both of our iPhones left the fence without the system being armed. It worked great for the first two or three days. Now it sends a push notification every time I leave the house, even if my wife is still at home. It sends nothing when she leaves. I have verified that both phones still have the Geo Services turned on. Why do you continue to show images of mobile apps with a Garage Door feature when you don't offer it? Lastly, it would be nice if the control panel and the touchscreen pad would display the website names for the various light controls and door locks. It's a little difficult to know which light out of seven I am trying to turn on or off from the touchscreen when they are identified as Light 0, Light 1, etc.

I have a few questions/concerns: I was told yesterday by a customer rep that the panic pendant has the same delay ad an alarm from any sensor, about which I am stunned. A PANIC pendant is used in a PANIC, such as someone's in my house, and I need help now. A panic pendant alarm should have no delay of any kind. Apparently you have programmed a delay to avoid accidental alarms. Also, oddly, I cannot arm my alarm as Away-No Delay using the app. I have to use the control panel. I can use the app to arm for Stay-No Delay only. You do this to prevent false alarms. Your concern about false alarms is providing just enough time for burglars to rob my house. Isn't preventing false alarms my job and problem and isn't your job protecting my house as securely as possible? Last question: what customer newsletter?

Hi Katherine! Great questions, I’ll address them as best I can. I definitely understand your concern about the delay on the Panic Pendant, but there have been many instances where button has been pressed on accident, making the delay necessary to reduce false alarms. This also helps out local authorities, who can respond to emergencies more effectively when having to deal with less false alarms. However, there is a way to reduce the timer on the delay if you’d like. I’ll have one of our Support Supervisors contact you to help you with this process. Unfortunately, there is no way around being unable to arm your system Away No Delay using the app. This functionality does not exist at this time, but I’ll also let our teams know about this request. I would add another vote for "away-no delay" I love the functionality of the app, and actually use it more than the panel or the fob that my wife carries, but being able to set a "away no delay" option would be awesome, especially since in our family we mostly use the remotes. If, in the course of owning the system we have to go in through the door, it does not take much effort to disarm the panel manually, though of course the alarm is rather loud!

We have terrible cell phone service in our home area, so I would like to suggest that when we arm or disarm the alarm system with the phone app, you add the sound of a lock being opened or closed when the action is completed. That way we can drive away without waiting for the several minutes it sometimes takes for the signal to get through and the iOS app to give the normal visual confirmation of the action; we can just listen for the "lock" sound to know all is well!
