Five Home Security Tips from CNN Money
Last week I read 5 Things to Know About Home Security by Ryan Derousseau on CNN Money. His points provided valuable insight into the current state of the home security industry. Here are our thoughts:
1) ‘New players mean fresh options’
Every week, it seems like another company is announcing their foray into the home security industry. Large companies with established reputations like AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon are investing heavily into their home security services; and newer, crowd-sourced upstarts like Canary and Piper are looking to shake things up.
The home security market is already a crowded field, but these new entrants are bringing valuable advertising dollars, which increase consumer awareness. The added competition also breeds innovation. Canary and Piper are instigating industry change with the introduction of self-reliant security systems, sleeker designs, and advanced technology. It remains to be seen how they will fare as the products have yet to hit the market, but these home security systems have already captured the industry’s – and consumers’ – attention.
2) ‘Your phone can help keep you safe’
Home security mobile apps allow users to directly control their home security systems from the palm of their hands. It’s a neat feature that has proven essential by our increasingly hectic and mobile lifestyles. Users can view a live camera feed at work, arm and disarm their system at the movies, or get emergency alerts while stuck in traffic.
However, not all apps are equal. Alarm.com, a partner of FrontPoint Security, has developed one of the best apps in the business – just check the ratings, they speak volumes. Best of all, with FrontPoint Security’s Interactive Monitoring Package, this mobile app is free!
3) ‘Someone must call the cops’
We couldn't agree more with Robert Siciliano’s statement: ”You want the call made to protect you.” Sure, you can save a few bucks by opting for a self-monitored solution, but you’re really going to want the extra protection. Home security systems protect you, your family, and your home, so the peace of mind you’ll gain from having 24/7 professional monitoring is worth the little extra spend.
4) ‘Customer service is the key’
As the article mentions, the equipment is very similar regardless of the home security company you select. It’s the level of service – support, monitoring, response time – that separates a good company from a great one. FrontPoint Security has made strong customer service a priority with our business and the reviews show it.
5) ‘The pros aren't your only choice’
While we believe everyone can benefit from owning a home security system, it’s not our decision. Aside from purchasing a security system, there are plenty of simple steps you can take to increase the safety of your home. These include remembering to lock your doors and windows as well as making smart social media decisions. Even convicted burglars are using their experience to give advice on how to better protect your home.
What are your thoughts on the current state, or the future, of home security? We’d love to hear from you! Feel free to share in the comments below.
