Home Alarm System for Peace of Mind

Whether after a day at work, a long hike or a week-long vacation, there’s just no place I’d rather be than in my home. There’s something about being home that fills me with a wonderful sense of peace, relaxation and happiness. It’s my safe haven – the place I can lounge around in my boxers while doing absolutely nothing.

I imagine that many others feel exactly the same way about their homes, so it’s pretty easy to see why so many people would want to protect their home. Peace of mind comes with knowing that your safe haven, family, pets and belongings remain well protected.

Unfortunately, there are burglars out there who aren’t concerned with your peace of mind, only with your belongings. But unfortunately for burglars, there are many effective ways to protect your home, none more effective than a home alarm system.

The Basics of Security Sensors

Security sensors are the most basic components of any alarm system, but don’t let that fool you, they’re also one of the most important. For most alarm system users, sensors operate as the first line of defense, protecting the perimeter of their home.

When a sensor – like a Door and Window or Motion Sensor – gets tripped, there is an immediate reaction. In a monitored system like FrontPoint’s, this means that it’ll send the alarm to a monitoring center, who will then contact you and the authorities.

Best of all, security sensors require no effort from you outside of the initial placement. They’re the ultimate “set-and-forget” type of protection for your home.

Protecting Against the Environment

However, many homeowners live in areas where their concerns are less about burglars and more about the environment – like flooding or wildfires. It’s a good thing then that there are sensors designed to help you protect against the elements.

A home rigged with a Smoke and Heat, Water and Flood, Freeze, or Carbon Monoxide sensors is well-equipped to face anything Mother Nature throws at it. Like any other sensor, anytime one of these sensors detects anything out of the ordinary, you and the monitoring center will know about it immediately, so you can react swiftly.

Monitoring is Important

So far, I’ve only discussed security sensors under the assumption that they’re being monitored. And that’s because having an alarm system that is monitored is important, and plays a huge role in having peace of mind.

Think of a monitoring center as an all-seeing eye that’s always hovering around your house. Whenever something is out of place – a sensor is tripped, system tampered with, etc… – it will know about it and subsequently, so will you. You can either confirm or deny the emergency. If it seems like a dire emergency, or if you don’t respond to the confirmation call, the monitoring center will immediately notify the authorities.

In comparison, a self-monitored alarm system requires you to act as your own monitoring center. You’ll have to be the one to know about the alert, confirm it and then call the authorities, which can be problematic in dire situations.

Cellular Monitoring is King

While we’re on the topic of monitoring, it’s also important to remember that not all forms of monitoring are equal.

The bottom line is that cellular monitoring is the safest and most reliable. Hardwired systems have one major security flaw: wires. A burglar with a cheap pair of wire cutters can defeat that. If you’re concerned about the security of your home, it’s easy to see how this flaw would put a dent in peace of mind.

Other Features that Help

We’ve gone through the basics of how a home alarm system can help you get peace of mind, so let’s focus on the extra goodies that can improve your home security.

Nowadays, security companies are offering systems jam-packed with features that make it easy to stay connected with your home 24/7, no matter your location. FrontPoint customers can purchase cameras, view live feeds from those cameras using a mobile app, receive instant alerts and more.

Achieving Peace of Mind

Put all of this together – sensors, cameras and features – and you get a complete home alarm system that will always be protecting your home. You’ll have a monitoring center that’s always got your back, while also have a bunch of features at your disposal to help you see what’s going on at home. Achieving peace of mind has never been easier.

Aside from home security and protection, installing an alarm system can really give us a peace of mind about our family's safety. It offers extensive security from criminals and burglars, allowing us to feel safer and more protected in our home. Good thing that more and more people have started to realize the importance of having an alarm system installed.

I've been wanting to get an alarm system for some time now, I've just been putting it off because of lack of time and money. My basement was flooded last week, and because my husband and I hardly ever go down there the water damage was pretty extensive, because we didn't stop it right away. I had no idea that house alarms could now detect natural disasters as well as burglary. If I had one of these, I would have avoided the extensive damage done to my house. I think it's time my husband and I sit down and really talk about getting one soon.

I'm extremely sorry you had to go through that experience Angela! Flooding is seriously no joke. The great thing about modern security systems is that as you said, they do much more than detect burglaries - flooding, freezing, fires, carbon monoxide, you name it! Please let me know if you'd like to know more about security systems (I'll be answering your question about Wireless vs. Wired shortly), or if you'd like to speak directly with a member of our team over the phone. Thanks!

I am sorry that your basement flooded. However, I did not know that security alarms can let you know when things like that are happening. Learning about prevention is definitely something our current focus is on.

Thank you for sharing this article about the importance of alarm systems. It is definitely true that having one installed in your home gives you a peace of mind. My brother and his family have always have a security system and he keeps urging us to get one as well. You never what will happen in your neighborhood and it is better to be in a safe household. I just need to find a professional to help me install a good security system. Thanks again.

Having security sensors is definitely important when having alarm systems work in your home. Motion sensor alarms help alert you quicker than if you have just your window alarmed or door. I agree with motion sensor alarms.

I didn't even think about an alarm for environmental damage, but that sounds like a good idea. If it's all connected to your phone, you can be alerted to a fire or flooded basement even when you're away. Knowing my basement was flooding would have saved me a lot of money last summer when our sprinklers broke while we were on vacation.

I had never considered just how vulnerable a hardwired security system could be. It's kind of scary to know that something like that can be taken out with just a pair of wire cutters! I've been thinking of getting a security system installed in my home. I'll definitely have to stay away from hardwired system and try to find a cellular one that works!

Hey, Gilgert! I appreciate you sharing this article with us. I recently had a baby, so I'm trying to make sure that our house is completely safe. This means installing a home security system and baby-proofing all of the appliances. I really want the peace-of-mind you're talking about, so I'm going to the store later this week. Great article—I'll definitely be sharing it with my friends.

Thanks for the information on cellular monitoring of my home. I never considered that a burglar could easily compromise my entire system with some wire cutters. I will definitely look into installing a system with cellular monitoring so as to completely avoid that problem.

I agree that peace of mind comes from knowing your home and everything in it is safe and protected with fire and burglar alarms. I didn't know that there were sensors that could help protect you from the environment, though. In the past couple years, I've seen the importance of having a good carbon monoxide detector. I will be sure to consider the benefits of the other environmental sensors.

Hi Gilbert, These are really points you've pointed out, thanks for sharing. I would just like to add that knowing what's going on outside your home is important but knowing what goes on inside, will give you peace of mind as well. Baby monitors and indoor cameras let you watch your loved ones while they're inside your home. Thanks.

Like you said, having a home alarm system ensures "peace of mind"; after a burglar broke into my home a few weeks ago, I haven't slept peacefully since! I think I'm going to follow your tip about having a system installed so as to ensure that my family and I are safe. I look forward to sleeping through the night again!

You're right, a sensor for doors and windows is the first line of defense and all function about the same. That's why I liked your explanation that the monitor of the security system is like an all seeing eye that receives sensor input and decides when to sound the alarm and call the authorities. That is a crucial part of an alarm system. Thanks for teaching me more about home security!

I like how you mentioned the importance of monitoring. It's kind of amazing how many people pay for a security system, and then never look at it again. If you aren't at least checking up on it, then you have absolutely no way of knowing that it's actually working. Hopefully people will take steps to avoid this problem in the future.

This is some great information, and I appreciate your point that security sensors require no effort from you besides the initial placement. My husband and I just moved into our first house, and I want to make sure it's safe for our family. I don't want to worry about a complicated system, but it would bring me peace of mind to have at least some basic sensors, so we'll definitely look into having some installed. Thanks for the great post!
