How to Monitor Kids After School When They Are Alone in Home

The school season can be a stressful one for parents with older children, as they’re stuck at work (or traffic, bleh) while their children are home alone after school. It’s not the ideal situation and for many parents, it can be worrisome.

There’s good news though: there are plenty of ways you can protect, monitor and keep track of your kids with a home alarm system – even when you can’t be home.

We want to make it really easy for Frontpoint customers to get the most out of their system, so here’s a guide on ways you can use your system to keep an eye on your kids when they’re home alone.

Notice Upon Arrival

There are two easy ways you can use your system to let you know exactly when your kids get home from school.

First, you can set up a specific user code for your child to use. And as long as you have Interactive or Ultimate Monitoring, you’ll be able to receive an instant notification whenever this code is used. You can also monitor when the code is being used online through the activity log. If Jack or Jill comes home later than usual, you’ll know it.

You can create and manage additional user codes through the Control Panel or MyFrontpoint.com.

Another way to see when your child is coming or going is simply by putting a Door and Window Sensor on the front door (or whatever door they use to enter).

This is slightly less precise in comparison to using a specific user code, but can get the job done. For those living in a small apartment, it could be the perfect solution.

Eyes in the Sky

Security cameras are another great option for making sure your kids are safe home alone. If you can’t be home, might as well get something that allows you to see exactly what’s going on whenever you want.

Frontpoint offers a variety of cameras that can monitor small and large areas, inside or outside. The variety allows the user to configure their system exactly to how they want it.

Do you want to see that your child makes it home safely? All you’ll need is a single camera watching the front door.

If you want to see everything that’s going on at all times, a few more cameras of different types will be necessary.

Light It Up

Wireless Light Controls are another great tool that you can use to protect your kids, and they’ll soon be particularly helpful with Daylight Saving Time right around the corner.

Wireless Light Controls allow you to control your lights (and some appliances) remotely. You can also set them up to be on a timer, so lights in your home turn on at scheduled times every day. This is a wonderful way to make sure your child arrives to a well-lit home.

Lights also act as a burglar deterrent. A home that’s well-lit is significantly less attractive to a burglar than one that isn’t – burglars don’t want to be seen after all.

The Child Monitoring System

Your home alarm system is a multi-purpose tool that is capable of doing all kinds of things – like making sure your kids are safe when they’re home alone. And your kids may hate it, but you can also make sure they’re not sneaking off!

Karissa, to be completely honest with you, the price range can vary greatly. It all depends on what you would like your system to monitor exactly. If you give our Security Consultants a call sometime and explain your needs, they could better gauge what products and setup you would need to stay safe.
