How Water and Flood Sensor Helps During Flood Season

As the old saying goes, April showers bring May flowers. And while this holds true, April also brings something more dangerous: flood season.

The heavy rainfall and melting snow contribute toward making floods a real threat to many people across the entire country. In fact, floods are the most common natural disaster in the US and all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods in the past five years.

Floods are not always caused by nature, and not all floods cover large areas. Sometimes a flood can be limited to a single home and it can be created by an internal source. The gutter you haven’t cleaned out all winter, pipes that are prone to freezing, or a malfunctioning washing machine can all be the cause of a small flood.

That’s where the Water and Flood Sensor helps. It’s specifically designed to alert you at the first signs of a potential flood. It can help you avoid the frustration and the cost of repairs, and, more importantly, it can save you and your home from disaster.

The Purpose of a Water and Flood Sensor

The Water and Flood Sensor has no other task but to instantly send an alert when it detects water or flood. However, in order to detect a problem, the sensor has to come into contact with water and you may be concerned – it is an electronic after all.

Thankfully, this is nothing to worry about because the Water and Flood Sensor comes in two pieces: the detector and the transmitter. The detector, as its name implies, is responsible for detecting the leak or flood. Upon coming into contact with water, it then relays a signal to the transmitter. Meanwhile, the transmitter will be safely above the water, where it will send the wireless signal to the control panel. The emergency responders will be notified and you’ll have time to react.

A Low-Effort, High-Reward Sensor

The Water and Flood Sensor is a very situational sensor, but it still holds incredible value. Sure, you may not get the everyday use that you get with a door window sensor or a motion detector, but that’s because it protects against a different type of threat. Remember, all it takes is a few inches of water to cause thousands of dollars in damage.

By notifying you instantly, the Water and Flood Sensor gives you time to react – whether the flooding is from bad pipes in your home or water streaming in from the outside. If a serious flood is on its way, you’ll be able to grab your disaster kit and evacuate. If it’s just inside your home, you can turn off the water to stop a leak before it gets worse and damages your basement.

Best of all, you get this flood protection for almost no effort. All you need to do is set the Water and Flood Sensor and then you can forget it (hopefully you’ll never have to be reminded of it!). It’s that easy. The hardest part is choosing a location to place it.

Common Places for a Water and Flood Sensor

Take a look and analyze the lowest floor of your home. The Water and Flood Sensor should be placed where a flood is likely to occur. Here are some suggestions:

  • Basement Floor – In most cases, the Water and Flood Sensor will be placed on the lowest floor of any home. It should be placed near the floor and either by a water source or where water could come in.
  • Water Heater – A common cause of in-home flooding is burst water heaters. Place the sensor nearby so it’ll detect the leak quickly so you can shut off the water before there’s too much damage.
  • Washing Machine – A washing machine can cause flooding in two ways: it could be connected to a leaky water line or it could malfunction and overflow.
  • Storm Door – If water is trying to enter your home from the outside, a storm door is often the first line of defense in keeping it out. Place the sensor by the door and you’ll be alerted instantly if the water makes it past your door.

The Water and Flood Sensor is a great addition for any security system owner, especially with spring’s arrival. Avoid costly damages to your home and be prepared to react if a flood or flash flood is on its way.
