Spring Break Travel Safety Tips

For many, spring break is the first opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather. Schools and universities let out, employees take much-needed vacations, and families and friends venture to warm weather destinations.

Spring break is the perfect time to just get away, relax and have a blast. However, some people take it too far and put themselves in harm’s way.

That’s why we’re focusing on spring break safety today. We want you to have a great time during your trip, but to also stay safe. While you’re soaking up the sun and erasing all traces of the winter blues, keep these safety tips in mind.

For the Road Trip

  • Get Rest – Good rest allows you stay alert when you drive - you’re responsible for your passengers’ safety. If you’re the passenger, you also need rest so you can be another set of eyes for the driver.
  • Prepare Your Car – Cars take a beating during long drives, so make sure it’s properly equipped to handle the rigors of the road. Here are our top 10 tips for springtime car maintenance.
  • Emergency Kit – You never know when your car may break down, so prepare for the worst and store an emergency kit in your vehicle. Make sure to include essential supplies, such as food, water and first aid.

Traveling by Plane

  • Protect Your Luggage – At all times, keep your belongings close to you, especially at security checks. Also, try to be one of the first ones to make it to the baggage claim to claim your luggage first.
  • Secure Valuables – Lock and zip your carry-on bags before placing them in overhead compartments. Also, place them in an aisle across from you, so you’ll be able to keep an eye on them throughout the flight.

At the Hotel, Around Town

  • Lock Your Room, Valuables – Avoid leaving out signs or other indicators that you’re not in your room. Also, keep your valuables well-hidden or store them in safes that many hotels provide.
  • Stay Alert – In tourist locations, thieves are quick to notice those who seem like they’ve never been there before. Be wary and do not draw attention to yourself.
  • Travel in Groups – There is strength in numbers, especially when traveling. Thieves are less likely to approach groups, so make sure to stick together and avoid wandering off alone.
  • Be Cautious Around Others – The majority of strangers you meet are good people, but it’s best to be careful. Don’t accept food or drink from strangers, and don’t engage in conversation with strangers who are asking strange questions or trying to distract you.
  • Limit Alcohol Consumption - For many, spring break means drinking. Have fun, but party smart and be responsible. Never accept a drink without a closed top and keep a trusted friend close by.

Health Safety

  • Stay Hydrated – The sun can maximize the effects of alcohol, so take it slow while you’re on the beach. Drink plenty of water, and never drink and swim.
  • Food Safety – Enjoy the local cuisine, but be aware that unusual dishes may have an interesting effect on your digestive system. Try not to overdo it, and remember to never accept food from strangers.
  • Use Sun Protection - Passing out drunk in the sun is funny in movies, but in reality, it can cause severe burns that require hospitalization. Always protect yourself from overexposure to the sun by reapplying sunscreen or covering up with clothing.

We want you to have the time of your lives during spring break, but we also want you to be safe. Be alert in all phases of your trip, and say hello to the sunshine and warm weather!
