Top 7 Reasons Why FrontPoint is Better than ADT

When you're shopping for home security, one brand often springs to mind: ADT. After all, nationwide TV advertising, lots of blue yard signs, and over a hundred years in the business should count for something. Most people don’t know that ADT stands for “American District Telegraph” – which is actually the way alarm signals were transmitted way back when. It’s ironic that today ADT is still struggling to catch up with current home security technology. They may not be using telegraph lines, but the huge majority of their systems (even most of the ADT systems being installed today) continue to rely on a vulnerable phone line. That's scary, considering the rate at which traditional phones lines are going away – and the frequency with which burglars are cutting those phone lines to take out your home alarm. Today’s blog post highlights the key differences between FrontPoint and ADT – and will provide plenty of food for thought if you’re still searching for the peace of mind that comes from knowing your home and family are truly protected.

    1. Cellular Monitoring. It’s a known fact that cellular monitoring is safer, and only one alarm company in the US has built digital cellular monitoring into every system they’ve ever sold – FrontPoint. Not only that, FrontPoint also charges less: on average, at least $10 per month less for comparable services. If you look on ADT’s web site, you don’t see much about cellular monitoring, which is understandable. How do you explain to millions of subscribers depending on a traditional phone line connection that their systems are outdated and susceptible to a $5 pair of wire cutters?

    1. Interactive Features. Alarm systems are a lot smarter today. You can get remote arm/disarm, text and email notifications, video services, free apps, and even control you’re your lights, locks, and thermostats from an web connection. These interactive services are FrontPoint’s specialty, and they don’t have to cost a lot. While ADT is trying to catch up with a new product called “Pulse,” they are still behind – and they left out a key element of safety and reliability in their new offering (more on Crash and Smash later).

    1. Easy Setup. FrontPoint has added the word “simpler” to home security with wireless sensors and wireless monitoring. Imagine a system that has no wires, no phone line, and requires no tools. Now there’s no inconvenient scheduling,no stranger in your home, and no inconvenient repeat visits. What’s more, with FrontPoint you can add sensors at any time, on your schedule - or even move the entire system with you. This is an option ADT just does not offer.

    1. Affordable Peace of Mind. Price is another area where FrontPoint shines. Their initial equipment cost is the best of any nationwide alarm provider, ADT included. Of course, it’s always better when you compare apples to apples (like making sure the initial equipment purchase includes the cellular radio) – and then see what happens as you add additional sensors to the basic system. With FrontPoint, the more protection you add, the more you save. And when it comes to monthly services, nobody beats FrontPoint: even ADT. FrontPoint charges less and provides more of the interactive services that people want, providing one more example that bigger does not mean better – or less expensive.

    1. Crash & Smash Protection. Only one nationwide DIY home security company in the US provides Crash & Smash peace of mind - and it’s not ADT. The technology, developed by FrontPoint’s technology partner, is incredibly smart and it’s patented. When a burglar invades your home and disable or rips the control unit off the wall, most systems are waiting for the “entry delay” to end before they communicate an alarm to the monitoring center. With FrontPoint, we know when the door first opened: if the system is not disarmed, or doesn’t send the alarm, we’ll make sure the police are on the way. This is a great example of how interactive monitoring has changed the game to increase your protection. Unfortunately it’s not part of any ADT offering.

    1. Reviews and Reputation. This is one area where the contrast could hardly be bigger. Yes, ADT is a big company, so it’s only fair to expect that they’ll have more complaints than FrontPoint. The real point, though, is what kind of service do they provide? Read the complaints for both companies, and see what people say about the quality of response, the helpfulness of the employees, and if the systems even work. Any by the way – it’s tough to find a review on FrontPoint that’s not five stars.

  1. ADT Dealer Program. One of the most confusing things about ADT is their

FrontPoint has been successfully competing with ADT for years. The harder people shop for home alarms, and the more research they do, the more likely they are to choose FrontPoint over the 800 lb. gorilla. After all, true peace of mind is earned by a lot more than just a brand name. FrontPoint has signed on lots of former ADT customers who were ready for world-class service and the next generation of wireless home security. When shopping for home security, it pays to look for safer, smarter, simpler, more affordable, and virtually impossible to defeat. When you compare, it’s clearly FrontPoint that comes out ahead – the #1 ranked alarm company in the US.

Your comparison between ADT and FrontPoint in residential alarm service was interesting. I was wondering if you have plans on entering the commercial market anytime soon?

Thanks for you inquiry - I also see you were in touch with our Support team on the same issue. We work with a large number of businesses, as our subscribers are divided at roughly 90% homes and 10% commercial systems. Our commercial customers are mostly small offices, retail spaces, and some storage facilities. We don't do any commercial fire: commercial fire has a specific set of requirements, and involves a physical presence by the alarm company, special licensing, etc. For commercial intrusion systems, several elements come into play: number of sensors, size and use of the space, insurance requirements, etc. I'd be happy to speak directly with you about your needs. You can email me directly at peter.rogers@frontpointsecurity.com.

We were ADT customers for 18 years prior to going with FrontPoint. During that time, ADT never approached us once with recommendations for upgrades or new features. I called them a few times over the years, asking if there were any upgrades or new features available for our system. Their answer was "no." Technology today advances at a rapid pace. I would prefer to be using a system that takes advantage of the newest technology available.

Thanks for that great testimonial. Something very close to that happened to my neighbors in DC: they had ADT for years, and though the monthly rate kept going up, they still had old-school technology (and a system that relied on a vulnerable phone line). Like you, they now have FrontPoint - and are paying less today for cellular monitoring with the interactive features than they did for their outdated system. We'll do our best to stay on the leading edge by introducing new technologies, as we did with video services, followed by the recent release of home automation in our Ultimate level of monitoring. And, we'll always tell you what's new!

Love Front-point been a customer for close to 2 years and I shopped around with All the competitors (ADT,Slomans etc) None can beat front point. Especially I love it when I am relying on my cable connection for my home phone which is not reliable. Cellular monitoring is the WAY to go I love it and have no regret,, great company and Great Service,,, Best thing, you can manage it from anywhere and lots of customization can be done from the site.. I recommend it for anyone out there I am in NY/West chester County. Dont be fooled by the ADT reps.

Alex - What a great statement, and thanks so much for taking the time to post a reply. You hit the nail squarely on the head several times: wireless monitoring being safer and more reliable then the internet, the benefits of FrontPoint's interactive services, and even your comments about our great service levels. Providing world-class service with folks who are courteous, knowledgeable, and prompt is an important way fur FrontPoint to be different (and better) than the other alarm companies - including ADT. Thanks again!

I recently signed up with FrontPoint after purchasing a new house, and I'm happy I discovered the company. I had used ADT (originally SecurityLink from Ameritech until they were bought out by ADT) in my old house. I was pleased with ADT -- luckily, the installer and service techs I interacted with were always first-rate -- but from a value perspective, FrontPoint was a clear winner with better technology and the sense of empowerment I received designing and installing my own system. Beyond that, I've been incredibly impressed with the customer support at FrontPoint. Two components were broken on arrival (including a glitchy touch-screen panel, which kept thinking it was being touched, leading to a tamper alarm going off the first night -- I can attest to the fact that the control panel has a LOUD alarm!), but FrontPoint shipped replacements out right away. Each time I've called FrontPoint support, the employees I've spoken with were friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Rather than working from a script or needing to look up info, off the top of their head they briskly guided me through the steps to add the replacement touch panel, adjust how certain sensors interacted with the system, etc. If only telecom and cable companies had that kind of support! The contrast couldn't be more dramatic. So, yeah, I'm a fan. Keep up the good work and those five star reviews will keep flowing in.

Scott - Thanks very much. It would be hard for us to invent such a constructive and positive affirmation of the FrontPoint business model. User feedback is incredibly valuable to us, and we love it: good or bad, since we often learn as much (or more) from criticism as we do from positive reinforcement. And ironically, my first employer in the alarm industry was SecurityLink. I was the VP Operations from 1989 until I left in 1991, long before you got your old system. That was also long before ADT acquired SecurityLink. We work with lots of former ADT customers, and while their experience with ADT as a service provider is varied, most of them agree that ADT was way behind on technology. FrontPoint tries to combine the best technology and the world-class service: since both of those attributes are important to you, I'm happy to hear we can count you as a fan. We'll work hard to keep your business - and thanks again.

would you do the installation ?
Peter M. Rogers
April 24, 2012
We can, but it's extremely unusual that any assistance is required: this is the easiest setup in the alarm industry - true "plug and play" for you, the end-user. We normally suggest you let us send your FrontPoint system and have you look at how simple it is, and how easy to follow the instructions are. No tools, and it usually takes about half an hour. If, after looking at just how easy we have made it, you still want help, we can arrange it.

@beenwatti: I recently subscribed to Frontpoint, and couldn't be happier with my decision. For your reference, I am NOT technologically savvy. Still, it took me all of about 25 minutes to set up my sensors, before I called Frontpoint for activation. They checked all my sensors to be sure all was in working order (they knew my back door was open when I called!). The rep walked me through arming and disarming. It was so unbelievably simple. Just be sure call for advise or personally plan out how many of each sensor you'd like, and how you'd place them around your home. The ease of installation and phenomonal customer service will shock you!

Thanks, Court - nothing like a testimonial from a satisfied FrontPoint customer to instill faith in those still shopping! Your story is a recurring one for us: customers who are amazed at how easy and quick the set up process is. That's because we are the first alarm company to develop a true "plug and play" experience - and that's why we get so many great reviews. I also like your comment on getting our expert advice on the system design: we train our Security Consultants to work with each potential customer on the right level of protection, based on the home layout and the way the system will be used. Lots of alarm companies use a "kit" approach that we call "One size fits some" - but remember, you can always add more FrontPoint sensors later, at very affordable prices. Thanks again!
