How to Add Multiple Users to Your System

This post was originally published on May 6, 2014. It was updated on February 28, 2020, with current product information.

How

different people—from family members to guests—can access a home with a

Frontpoint security system

Accessibility is a huge part of your home alarm system. That’s why Frontpoint offers products like the Keychain Remote and features like the Frontpoint Mobile App. Those are, by default, great for a single user. But if you’re wondering how to add users to your Frontpoint security system, we’ve also made that as convenient as possible.

By creating multiple unique user codes, Frontpoint’s home alarm system offers you more convenience—without sacrificing security. First, let’s examine each type of code associated with your system.

Different

types of Frontpoint codes

When you think about accessing a home security system, a "master code"  likely comes to mind. This is the 4-digit code that has the most control over your alarm system. A master code comes pre-programmed into your Frontpoint Hub or Frontpoint Control Panel, and it must remain a closely guarded secret. Think of the master code as the very first user code your system has, and the one with the most power.

What if multiple people need to use your home alarm system, though?

Even though you may trust all of your family members with full access, it’s useful to create unique user codes for everyone who needs to disarm your system. We’ll explore why users and codes are critical to the security of your home in a moment. But first, let’s review the three types of Frontpoint user codes:

Master code

The 4-digit master code has the most control over your Frontpoint security system. You’ll never be asked to state your master code over the phone. This code can:

  • Arm and disarm the system
  • Change settings in your account

User codes

While your system only has one master code, you can add multiple user codes. These additional 4-digit codes can:

  • Arm and disarm the system

Passcode

Your passcode is a secret word used to verify your identity when speaking with Frontpoint. You will use your passcode to:

When (and

why) you should use unique access codes

Homes should be a safe space to live, play, and connect. But it’s possible to leave your home vulnerable, even with a security system. As we mentioned above, your master code should be kept private. Think of your master code like the password to your bank account or your credit card details. Now imagine giving that information away to every family member, every dog walker, every cleaning crew, and every neighbor who waters your plants while you’re out of town. That would be reckless!

Instead of sharing your master code, share user codes with people who need to arm or disarm your Frontpoint security system but don’t need the power to act on your behalf when responding to alarms. Here are a few scenarios where user codes come in handy:

  • You have family members who come and go at different times. Every family member has their own schedule and, often, a full calendar. Giving your kids their own user codes allows them to come and go as necessary, and it lets you see when they’ve made it home from school.
  • You have service professionals who visit while you’re at work. If you ever hire a nanny, dog walker, or housekeeper, you’ll want to create new security user codes for each person. This way, you can check to make sure they arrived to do their job as well as remove access if they no longer work for you. User codes are also helpful for the times you need to let a plumber or electrician in while you’re away. Read more about how dog walking apps can open your doors to thieves.
  • You have temporary house guests. Having family and friends visit from out of town is great, but giving each one the master code is not advisable. It is better to set unique user codes for temporary houseguests. That allows them to come and go on their schedule, and you don’t need to be around to let them in and out of your home.
  • You have older family members you’d like to monitor. Individuals with elderly family members can employ user codes to track their loved ones’ activity. Let’s say, for example, your elderly mother and father live in their own home. User codes that they create can be easier to remember, and you can make sure they’ve made it back home safely at the end of the day. Add, edit,

and remove Frontpoint users

Now that we’ve explored some of the ways Frontpoint codes can be used, let’s cover how to add, edit, and remove users.

How to add a user code

Adding user codes is very easy and can be done through your Frontpoint Customer Portal or the Frontpoint App. Through Protection Monitoring, you can also add users and codes by contacting Customer Care at 1-877-602-5276. Here’s how to add a user to your Frontpoint account:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Click “Users” in the menu to the left.
  3. Click “Add a User” and enter the first and last name of the new user.
  4. Click the Lock icon below the name field to enable access for the new user.
  5. Click into the Access Code box and enter a unique 4-digit code for that user.
  6. Click Save.

How to check user code activity

One of the most useful features of unique user codes is the ability to track activity within your account. To do this, log in to your Frontpoint Customer Portal or the Frontpoint App and click on “Activity” on the left-hand side. Here, you’ll be able to see a log of all activity related to your system, and which user codes were used.

How to change or remove a user code

When a user code is no longer needed, all you need to do is edit or remove the contact from your user codes list. In your Frontpoint Customer Portal or the Frontpoint App, follow these steps:

  1. Click “Users” in the menu to the left.
  2. Click the Trash Can icon to delete a contact.
  3. Click the Pencil icon to edit access.

How to change a master code

Changing your master code can be done the same way you edit user codes. Your master code is pre-programmed into your Frontpoint Hub or Frontpoint Control Panel.

Multiple user codes provide a convenient way for an entire household and trusted guests to use the home’s alarm system. And since you can see who’s accessing the system at all times, you can have peace of mind wherever you are.
