Summer Home Safety Tips to Keep Your Family Protected

Summer is here; for most, that means hosting company, traveling, and enjoying the fresh outdoors. While warm weather is fantastic, it also comes with its hazards. Make sure you consider home safety while having fun in the sun. Here are some home safety tips to keep your family protected all summer long.

1. Monitor your children and

pets when outdoors

Ensure that your yard is clear of harmful products like fertilizers, pool chemicals, and garden tools. If you have animals, be sure to remove any poisonous plants that may be in your yard so that your fur babies won't ingest them. Having an outdoor camera is very beneficial when it comes to keeping an eye on not only your property but your children and pets. Easily talk to your kids outside with Frontpoint’s two-way audio function on the Outdoor Camera. The Video Analytics feature allows you to set up virtual zones or tripwires to closely monitor specified areas, such as a garden or tool shed.

2. Take proper pool measures

Those of you who have an above ground or built-in pool or hot tub, ensure the kids can't get to it when you're not around. The same applies to pets. Install safety fences between your home and the pool/hot tub and locks on doors and windows. When doing pool maintenance, make sure you're locking away pool supplies and buckets too. Any small amount of water can be a drowning hazard for small children and pets.

3. Keep up with your HVAC maintenance

When the weather gets hotter, it is vital to ensure that your HVAC system is working properly. Here are some summer HVAC maintenance tips:

1.       Install a smart thermostat. Frontpoint’s Smart Thermometer will let you know if it detects that your HVAC is having issues.

2.       Set annual maintenance appointments. An air conditioning unit that is not adequately maintained can become a fire hazard.

3.       Replace your filter regularly. This will keep your air clean and your AC working properly.

4.       Adjust the temperature. An overworked air conditioning unit can cost you money and strain your unit, so don’t overdo it.

4. Be prepared for flooding

Summer is known for its warm, sunny weather. Unfortunately, it’s also known for its heavy rainstorms. Use a hazard sensor in any areas of your home that could potentially flood. The Frontpoint Flood Sensor will alert you as soon as it detects any moisture so that you can take action before there is any damage.

5. Protect your home from burglars

Summer and spring are when people travel the most, making their homes a target for burglars and porch pirates. Doorbell cameras and outdoor cameras will help you keep an eye on the perimeter of your property while you’re away. Thanks to Video Analytics, the Frontpoint Outdoor camera can distinguish between people, animals and vehicles so that you can customize notifications to your preference. Your cameras will detect motion and notify you if someone lurks around your property.

Keeping the outside of your home well-lit at night can also deter intruders. Frontpoint’s Outdoor Smart Plug allows you to turn on your outdoor lights with your smartphone or set up a schedule for them to turn on automatically.

Enjoy all that summer offers while keeping you, your home, and your family safe.
