More Warnings on Confronting Burglars: One Homeowner Shot, the Other Attacked
Every police department in the US agrees on this important advice: do not, under any circumstances, confront a burglar in your home. The big problem is that you don’t always know that an intruder is in your home when you walk through the door – especially if you have no monitored alarm system to alert police and scare the burglar off. It’s a dangerous situation when you enter your home thinking all is well, and encounter someone in the act of stealing your cash, jewelry, or electronics. When you have no warning, as happened in this story from Bethlehem, PA, the results can be tragic.
A man was shot when he returned home Monday afternoon and caught a trio of burglars in the act, police said. The gunfire erupted around 2:45 p.m. inside a home in the 500 block of Jischke St. in Bethlehem, said. Det. Sgt. Mark DiLuzio, Bethlehem Police Dept. Kevin Cook, 39, was shot once by one of the three intruders. Cook was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill, Lehigh Co. The only description police have of the three intruders is that they are Hispanic men who drove off in a dark-colored SUV.
You Can Avoid Your Own Violent Encounter
These stories are always frightening to read. Assuming a determined burglar is going to find a way in (and they generally do), then what’s the best defense? The answer, very simply, is readily available and surprisingly affordable: a monitored home alarm system. The best way to deter a burglar in the first place is with proven technology that scares the burglar away and sends an alarm so that police can be dispatched to your home. If the perps are not frightened off by the loud siren, then the police will deal with them when they get there. Police are trained to handle potentially armed and dangerous intruders – you’re not.
Homeowner Attacked in NYC Suburb
Police said the incident began when the Orangeburg resident arrived home at 2 p.m. and discovered two men in his living room, where they were taking items from a hutch. Police said the two intruders attacked the resident, with the struggle spilling out to a common hall area in the condo building. During the struggle, police said, the victim defended himself by punching both intruders. Police said that as the victim restrained one intruder and called out for help, the other intruder dropped a bag of silverware and fled. When police arrived, they arrested intruder who had been restrained. The condo resident was not injured in the struggle, police said. Police found have two metal lock picks and a Leatherman tool, as well as black gloves, on the intruder they arrested.
